Pastor Thomas has served as senior pastor of the C&MA church in Baghdad. He and his family risked their lives to start an underground church during Saddam Hussein's regime in 1999. Rep. Lewis, who turned 100 years old on Dec. 30, 2013. Mr. Lewis is a lifelong resident of Jefferson Hills. He started working at the age of 16 through the Depression and has kept working ever since. He still enjoys cutting his grass himself. On Dec. 3, I had the privilege of presenting Linda Hall with a citation that recognized her 34 years of service to the Borough of New Eagle. Representative Saccone had the privilege of presenting Christopher Bredel, Pleasant Hills Troop 231, with an official House citation for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout during his Court of Honor ceremony. Christopher is the son of Ronald and Ellen Bredel of Jefferson Hills. On New Year’s Day 2013, Rep. Rick Saccone (R-Allegheny/Washington) officially took the oath of office to represent the people of the 39th District for his second term in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. The state Constitution requires members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives be sworn in for the new session on the first Tuesday in January, which this year fell on New Year's Day. On Monday, Dec. 10, Rep. Saccone and his wife, district office staff and several local residents went room to room at Mt. Vernon Senior Living in Elizabeth Twp. singing traditional Christmas songs while distributing care packages and holiday treats. In recognition for his strong support of key pro-business legislation during the 2011-12 Legislative Session, Rep. Saccone received his first “Guardian of Small Business” Award from Pennsylvania National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) State Director Kevin Shivers. On Oct. 31, Rep. Saccone joined with the children, parents and staff for the annual Tender Care Learning Center(Jefferson Hills) fall costume celebration. One extra special and extremely well dressed guest at Rep. Saccone's Fall 2012 Senior Expo was Anastasia. Anastasia is a hospice/therapy dog through Three Rivers Hospice and Palliative Care in Pittsburgh. In addition to having her picture taken with him for the organization's upcoming calendar, Anastasia also sang (barked) Happy Birthday for one local senior citizen. Rep. Saccone expressed his gratitude to Pastor Tim Burgan (Center), Christian Center Church located in Belle Vernon, for serving as guest chaplain and delivering the opening prayer on the state House floor on Oct. 15. The 60 District 39 residents who participated Rep. Saccone's Fall 2012 Religious Liberties bus tour, on Monday, Oct. 15, were also officially recognized on the floor of the Pennsylvania House. On Sept. 25, Rep. Saccone and the Shriners participated in the South Park Community Days Parade. Representative Saccone recently visited Mt. Vernon Assistant Living Residence of South Park Nursing Home to present Ms. Margaret Tignanelli with flowers and an official House citation in celebration of her 103rd Birthday. On Sept. 6, Rep. Saccone participated in a House Republican Policy Committee hearing, held at Saint Vincent College, focusing on the tremendous impact of coal for Pennsylvania's economy. According to statistics offered at the hearing, approximately 45,000 Pennsylvanians are directly or indirectly employed by the coal industry. Many of those jobs are being endangered by excessive and overzealous federal environmental regulations. On Aug. 25, Representative Saccone was privileged and honored to host a family picnic for more than 100 local veterans at Clairton Sportsmen's Club. Featured speakers included Lt. Gov. On Aug. 13, Rep. Saccone presented a talk regarding his stay in North Korea at South Park Library. As a member of the PA House Coal Caucus, Rep. Saccone had the opportunity to "test drive" a coal mining machine while touring a long wall mining operation located in Waynesburg, Greene County. The number of jobs the coal industry creates for Pennsylvania is tremendous and the economic spillover of coal related jobs and products is staggering. In response to the recent allegations of child sex abuse at Penn State University, as a member of the House Children and Youth Committee I am working to advance legislation to create stronger laws to protect potential child abuse victims. House Bill 544 would create an office of children’s ombudsman in the Commonwealth. The office would be under the supervision of the attorney general to receive, process and investigate complaints related to child abuse, to pursue legislative activity in the best interests of children and to identify and make appropriate recommendations to the governor, General Assembly and state Supreme Court with regard to child welfare issues.
